Guu Garlic

Guu Garlic has managed to do the impossible: to make garlic sexy. Guu serves Japanese-style tapas in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

I was introduced to Guu by @DennisPang, who not only is a social media influencer of the highest caliber, but a well know connoisseur of good food and drink (if you doubt me, just follow his Instagram).

Dennis was kind enough to order for all of us. Here are some of the dishes we tried:

Grilled Squid with Garlic Mayo ($7.80)

This was my favourite dish of the night. I you visit Guu with Garlic, you have to order it. The squid wasn’t rubbery at all, it had a fantastic, meaty consistency. Add a bit of the garlic mayo and it was exquisite. I would order this again in a heartbeat.

Kimchi Udon ($8.50)

The noodles are marinated and tossed in cod roe, kimchi, butter, soy sauce and green onion and are served with seaweed.

Beef Tataki ($6.20)

Thin slices of beef marinated in plum dressing, seared and served with wasabi mayo.

Ebi Mayo ($8.50)

Deep fried prawns served with chilly mayo.

Beef Tongue ($8.50)

Grilled beef tongue with garlic butter, soy sauce and garlic chips. I haven’t tried beef tongue since my childhood and I hated it. But this dish has changed all this for me. It was simply exquisite. So meaty and perfectly marinated.

Hotate Butter ($8.80)

Scallops grilled in soy garlic butter, served with green onions, garlic chips and bonito flakes. Another must order at Guu with Garlic.

Tontoro ($6.20)

Grilled pork cheek with yuzu ponzu sauce.

IMG_3427

Kakuni ($6.40)

Stewed pork belly with daikon and egg.

Scallop Mayo Pizza ($6.40)

A bit heavy, but an excellent dish to share.

Saba Grill ($7.80)

Oven grilled mackerel with soy sauce, garlic and dill.

Needless to say, we were stuffed by the end of the meal. If you have an opportunity to dine with @dennispang, I highly recommend it. The man knows food.

We complimented our dinner with a pitcher of Sapuro Japanese beer. ($18.00). Excellent paring.

Guu is an experience best shared with friends. If you plan to visit, make sure you come with a group of 3 or more (the more the better) to truly appreciate the diverse menu this restaurant has to offer.
