#PrestonsGIB Summer Kickoff Tweetup
With the start of summer comes patio parties and launching of summer food and bar menus. Prestons, located at the Coast hotel on West Pender Street in Vancouver’s financial district, hosted a summer tweetup event to launch some new menu items as well as partnering with local brewery Granville Island Brewing to showcase its selection of beers.
A Granville Island Brewing station was setup on the patio with a selection of its beers for sampling including my favorite Cypress Honey Lager, and my new favorite, the False Creek Raspberry Ale (a seasonal offering). The Raspberry Ale is similar to the Honey Lager in which it’s a bit on the sweeter, lighter side, however the raspberry ale has a fruitier taste in the beer. Definitely a summer beer to enjoy! It was also noticeably a top choice for sampling. On top of the sampling, if purchasing bottles of beer at the bar, if you find a sticker on the bottom of the bottle, you win a prize. Luckily for me I got a red sticker, which meant I won a Granville Island beer cup!
The food tasters slowly trickled out by the servers – starting with the Lemon & Thyme Roasted Chicken on toast (the main menu offers it as a sandwich, which included a piece of oven roasted tomato, arugula, pesto, red onion and parmesan. It was a great starter on the piece of crispy toast – great appetizer starter as well!
Next up was the Prosciutto Flatbread Pizza, consisting of caramelized onions, arugula, parmesan, fire roasted red peppers, slices of pear to top it off with a balsamic glaze. I definitely like the balsamic glaze on the pizza flatbread and the pear to top it off was delicious! Gave it a nice sweetness. Personally not a huge fan of onions, but the caramelized onions were minimal so I didn’t mind it too much.
My favorite sample of the evening was a new Torpedo Shrimp sushi roll that’s currently not on the menu. In development and looking to add it to the menu, Prestons prepared a wonderful new roll. It was a torpedo shrimp (shrimp wrapped and fried in a tasty wrapper similar to a wonton or spring roll wrapper), along with cucumber and spicy mayo wrapped in seaweed/rice, battered and the outside fried with tempura. This roll was warm on the outside, crunchy, and had the cooler texture on the inside that made it a standout dish. Can’t wait to see this on the regular menu!
Another highlight dish of the night, a new item on the menu, was the Wild Mushroom & Pulled Pork Pappardelle. The pappardelle texture was just right, with a subtle amount of pulled pork and wild mushroom infused in a garlic cream sauce topped with oven roasted tomatoes and slices of fresh parmesan. I wasn’t a huge fan of the pulled pork but the rest of the dish was savory and the sauce was not too right.
The last dish I tried in the evening was the Mexican Pulled Chicken Quesadilla, stuffed with four cheese and topped with homemade salsa and creme fraiche. I really enjoyed the creme fraiche drizzled on top of the quesadilla.
Overall, the event was a great event for mixing and mingling. Prestons bar staff was super helpful keeping up with our beverage orders, while the servers were patient in bringing out all the samples to the large groups of people anxiously awaiting a taste of the new menu. Highly recommend on a nice summer day to sit on Prestons patio, order a Granville Island False Creek Raspberry Ale, and enjoy some of their new menu items. BTW, they have drink specials daily!
