I don’t venture out to Steveston’s very often. But when I do, it’s such a treat.
The Hog Shack is a BBQ Restaurant located in the heart of Steveston’s Village in Richmond. It has a large variety of craft beers on tap. I had a fantastic beer there: The Howe Sound King Hefty ($5.95) was refreshing and had notes of banana (yes, bananas) Their menu ranges from BBQ favourites to chicken and fish dishes. I was impressed by the versatility of the menu.
It’s a casual restaurant, with a large patio and large windows. Lot’s of TV screens to watch the game on. The atmosphere is great, when we got there, they were playing 80’s rock, and people couldn’t help singing along.
We wanted to try a few appies before our meal, our server suggested an item off the menu: The pulled pork pancakes ($13) are not on the menu. They are a special item, but man oh man, they should be! One order consists of three pancakes stacked high with pulled pork and corn, drizzled with maple syrup. This could very well be, my favourite dish of all time. The pork was moist and the corn was a nice touch.
For dinner we had the Cajun Chicken Burger ($12) The chicken was tender, moist and juicy. And the sauce was amazing. Just the right amount of spice. It was also a very nice portion. It came with a generous order of fries. We also had the half rack of baby back ribs ($17) the order comes with your choice of two side dishes, your choice of baked beans, coleslaw, corn bread, mashed potatoes, yam fries, rice pilaf, potatoes wedges, and sauté vegetables. For my two sides, I ordered the baked beans and the coleslaw. I was very happy with my choices. The coleslaw came with a creamy, honey mustard dressing, and the baked beans had a delicious smokey flavour.
We also ordered a side of Burnt Ends ($11). These are rib ends that are smoked longer than the rest of the ribs. They are little fattier than the rest of the ribs. But oh so tasty. They came drizzled with their homemade BBQ sauce. Such a tasty sauce too! Very rich and a hint of spice. They were good, but I would still recommend the ribs.
For dessert we had the Lemon Ice Box Pie ($7) such a tasty, pie! It’s more than a mousse, a cheesy, cheesecake type of mousse. I really recommend making room for this dessert. It was nothing short of amazing and enough for two people.
