Oyama is located on what it used to be the old Johnson House. This building has had many incarnations during its lifetime. From family house, funeral home, art gallery and finally a restaurant. This heritage home has a feel and look of its own.

This is a beautiful restaurant: hardwood floors, glass accents a beautiful stone exterior and lots of windows. It’s a very unique space!

My friend and contributor, Michael, his husband Kevin, and I, decided to check out Oyama for lunch last Friday. I’ve heard good things about them, such as the freshness of their sushi and they’re also known for offering good quantities.

We came out to try their lunch combos: Good food, lots of variety and fresh rolls, the combos also come with miso soup and salad. We also ordered the Tuna Gomae  ($5.40) as a an appetizer. It had spinach on a sesame peanut sauce and tuna sashimi. Very fresh and very good. The sauce was a tad grainy, which puzzled me, as I’m used to gomae sauce to be very smooth. Still, it was very tasty.

I had the Veggie Combo ($9.95). My order came with an avocado roll, sweet potato tempura roll and a veggie roll. The sushi was perfectly rolled and well packed. They didn’t fall apart when I picked them up. Also I the rolls were bite sized. My rolls were very fresh, my veggies nice and crispy. Lots of food.

Michael ordered the Chicken Katsu ($8.95). It came with salad and rice. The chicken was well breaded and not too oily according to Michael, and he enjoyed it very much. Kevin decided to go for another sushi combo: the Maki Combo B ($9.35). California, dynamite, salmon and tuna rolls. Again, nice and fresh rolls and lots of food for the price that we paid.

We left Oyama with happy bellies to say the least. This is good solid sushi and the prices are reasonable. Next time I will try their house rolls, and go for more of a gourmet experience.
