Ten years ago, a film changed how we think about space—and how we hear it. “Interstellar,” directed by Christopher Nolan, took us to the far reaches of the universe. The music composed by Hans Zimmer transported us there emotionally. That soaring soundtrack had an unforgettable use of the organ. It gave voice to the vastness and mystery of space like nothing else. And now, a decade later, Roger Sayer, the organist behind that iconic score, is celebrating this milestone with a tour that ends with five concerts across Canada.

For those who haven’t yet experienced the magic of Interstellar, let me just say: this is not just a concert—it’s an event. Roger Sayer, who collaborated with Hans Zimmer to bring Nolan’s vision to life, will share his behind-the-scenes stories about working with these two living legends of cinema. He’ll be playing his own transcription of the soundtrack on the organ, an instrument that Zimmer chose for its power to express the wonder of the cosmos. And what a perfect choice it was.

The tour has already captivated audiences around the world, with sold-out performances in Japan, Australia, the UK, and Europe. Now it’s our turn. Brought here by the Royal Canadian College of Organists, Sayer’s program will include the opening theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey” (because what’s a space epic without Richard Strauss?), selections from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” and of course, the sweeping, emotional highlights of the “Interstellar” soundtrack. Interstellar, as arranged by Roger Sayer, follows the drama and intense emotions of the storyline, interweaving the main themes from the movie—including Cornfield Chase, Stay, and No Time for Caution—in one continuous captivating performance. There’s even a special screening of a documentary about the creation of the soundtrack, followed by a Q&A with Sayer—a rare chance to ask him about the intricate process of making music that truly sounds like the universe.
