Nestled in the heart of Coquitlam, Mariner Brewing isn’t just a place to grab a beer—it’s a place to feel at home. Recently, I sat down with Gil Desaulniers, co-owner of Mariner Brewing, to hear the story behind the brewery and the passion that makes it a community favourite.

From Passion to Pints

Mariner Brewing has been a part of the Coquitlam community for seven years, but things took a fresh turn when Gil and his business partner bought it a year and a half ago. Their goal? To make Mariner Brewing a true neighborhood hub.

“We’ve worked hard to turn this place into a community space,” Gil said. “That’s why we host events like ‘Babies and Brews.’ Every Tuesday, we set up a cozy area with play mats and toys so parents and babies can hang out and connect. It’s amazing to see people come together.”

And it’s not just about beer. Mariner Brewing offers kombucha, sodas, and other non-alcoholic options, making it a family-friendly spot where everyone feels welcome

For Gil, keeping the business in Coquitlam was non-negotiable. As a 16-year resident, he’s deeply rooted in the community and loves the area’s small-town charm and access to nature.

“I’ve always been about community,” he shared. “When I was looking for a business to buy, it was important that it felt authentic. I’ve lived here so long, and I wanted to create something meaningful—a place where people can come together.”

Stumbling Into the Beer Business

Gil’s journey into craft beer wasn’t exactly planned. He started by befriending a local brewery owner and learning the ropes over casual conversations. When the time came to pursue a new business venture, the stars aligned. A nearby brewery came up for sale, and it just happened to be the closest one to his home.

“It was perfect timing,” Gil said with a smile. “The brewery already had a great team—they just needed someone with a vision to evolve it. It felt like everything was meant to be.”

Mariner Brewing’s tagline, “Made to Explore,” isn’t just catchy—it’s deeply personal. Gil, an avid outdoorsman, wanted the brewery to reflect his love for adventure and the beauty of Coquitlam. Many of their beers are named after local landmarks, like Lafarge Lake Lager and Mundy Park Mango Sour.

“Beer is about more than drinking—it’s about connection and exploration,” Gil explained. “Whether it’s exploring nature, trying new beer styles, or meeting new people, it’s all about discovering something new.”

A Taproom for Everyone

Mariner Brewing’s taproom is designed with the community in mind. From hosting events like Wing Wednesdays (with some seriously juicy wings) to offering discounts for completing the Coquitlam Crunch, the space is all about celebrating local life.

“I love seeing people come in after a hike or bike ride, grab a beer, and share stories about their day,” Gil said. “It’s what this place is all about—bringing people together.”

One thing that sets Mariner Brewing apart is its inclusive and forward-thinking team. Gil is especially proud of their head brewer, Kristy Isaak.

“She’s fantastic,” he said. “Having a woman lead our brewing team is inspiring, and she’s so talented at what she does.”

Building Something Bigger

For Gil, running Mariner Brewing isn’t just about making beer—it’s about building community. Whether you’re a craft beer enthusiast, a parent looking for a welcoming space, or someone who just loves the outdoors, Mariner Brewing has something for you.

“The community here has been so supportive,” Gil said. “We’re always finding new ways to celebrate that, and it’s what keeps us going.”

If you’re ever in Coquitlam, stop by Mariner Brewing. Have a beer (or a kombucha), meet new friends, and see for yourself why this place is so much more than just a brewery.
