Let me start with this bold but honest statement: this is the nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. And I’ve stayed in a few—some fabulous, some… character-building. (Remember Oakland Josh??) But Bastión Luxury Hotel in Cartagena’s walled city? It’s in a class of its own.

This upscale boutique hotel is located in the heart of Cartagena’s historic Old Town. It blends 16th-century colonial charm with luxurious, modern amenities. You’re essentially sleeping in history—except with better water pressure and a Smart TV.

From the moment I walked in, I knew I was somewhere special. Arched stone corridors, lush greenery, and elegant tilework gave the hotel a grand, almost cinematic feel. My room was beautifully appointed with colonial-inspired décor and thoughtful modern touches—hello, Nespresso machine and silky soft sheets. And speaking of sheets… they were incredibly soft. I may or may not have considered packing them in my carry-on. (Don’t worry, I didn’t.)

The bathroom was pure luxury. It had a clean, minimalist design. The high-end products made me feel like I was starring in a skincare commercial. Some bathrooms in the hotel don’t offer full privacy. However, mine felt serene and stylish. There was just enough room to twirl dramatically in a robe. Not that I did that. (Okay, maybe once.)

What really impressed me were the thoughtful little touches that elevated the experience. Each evening, a sweet surprise awaited. Tamarind candies were delicately placed by the bed. It felt like a wink from the universe, saying, “You deserve a treat.” One afternoon, the staff brought a refreshing drink right to my room, without being prompted. That type of attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed—or unappreciated.

Now, let’s talk about the rooftop pool and bar. I didn’t get the chance to lounge by the pool. I was too busy soaking up every corner of Cartagena. But I did take a peek—and wow. The views are spectacular. Picture this: terracotta rooftops, church domes, and the Caribbean Sea all glowing under the golden hour sun. It’s the kind of rooftop you want to toast your life choices from.

And foodies, take note: El Gobernador, the on-site restaurant, is well worth your time. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with flair—and the free breakfast each morning was fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. Colombian coffee included, of course.

Need a break from exploring? There’s a small spa and fitness center. Additionally, there is an air-conditioned communal living room that doubles as a meeting space if you’re mixing business with pleasure.
