If you’ve driven the Sea to Sky Highway lately, you’ve probably noticed the transformation at Britannia Beach. After two decades of planning, restoration, and vision, Britannia Village is ready to welcome visitors with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, August 23, starting at noon.

This vibrant new hub occupies nine restored buildings from the original Britannia Mine townsite, blending historic character with modern West Coast charm. The grand opening will feature live music, family activities, giveaways, and the chance to explore what’s quickly becoming a must-stop destination on Highway 99.

What to Expect at Britannia Village

This isn’t just another roadside attraction. Britannia Village is a thoughtfully designed, walkable community nestled between the Coast Mountains and Howe Sound. Spearheaded by architect Donal O’Callaghan and supported by local historians, the project honors the area’s mining past while creating a space that’s both useful and beautiful.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Adventure playground for kids
  • Interpretive trail along Britannia Creek
  • Public washrooms and 10 EV charging stations
  • Free public Wi-Fi
  • Memorial Park, featuring artwork by Squamish Nation carver Jim Charlie

A Taste of What’s to Come

Britannia Village is already home to a growing list of restaurants, cafés, and shops that reflect the region’s love for quality, craft, and community:

The Vision Behind the Village

This project was more than a facelift—it was a complete environmental and cultural renewal. Two decades ago, the site was still leaking three tons of copper daily into Howe Sound from its abandoned mine shafts. That changed when the land was acquired and a cleanup was coordinated with the Province, setting off a chain of restoration efforts that have revitalized the entire area.

Today, the town has been rebuilt, with 100 new homes and 73 townhouses, all anchored by the newly opened Britannia Village. The impact? A once-dormant stretch of coastline is now thriving again.

As the developer puts it:

“I consider the restoration of this historical and ecological zone in Howe Sound to be the most important thing I have done in my long life of development.”

Celebrate the Grand Opening – Saturday, August 23

The celebration kicks off at noon and runs until 4 PM. Expect a full afternoon of music, face painting, balloon art, games, and community spirit. Admission is free and open to everyone.
