Last night, my son and I had the chance to experience Disney’s The Lion King at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, and I can honestly say, it was pure magic. From the very first notes of “Circle of Life” to the final bow, we were completely immersed in a world of vibrant color, unforgettable music, and jaw-dropping stagecraft.

A Feast for the Senses

The touring production of The Lion King in Vancouver, directed by the visionary Julie Taymor, has become a global phenomenon for good reason. Taymor not only directed but also designed the breathtaking costumes and masks that bring the African savannah to life. Her creative genius transforms actors into gazelles, elephants, and birds, with puppetry so ingenious that you forget the people beneath the costumes.

Garth Fagan’s choreography layers the show with movement that feels primal and celebratory at once. Whether it’s the regal procession of animals or the playful pounce of young Simba, the dances pulse with energy.

The music, composed by Elton John and Tim Rice with additional contributions from Hans Zimmer, Lebo M., and Mark Mancina, soars in the hands of the cast and live orchestra. Familiar songs like “Hakuna Matata” had the audience smiling, while “Shadowland” and “Endless Night” tugged at the heartstrings.

The Vancouver performances showcase a powerhouse touring cast that brings new life to these iconic roles:

Darian Sanders as Simba Khalifa White as Nala (with some performances also featuring Carole Stennett) Gerald Ramsey as Mufasa Peter Hargrave as Scar Mukelisiwe Goba as Rafiki Nick Cordileone as Timon John E. Brady as Pumbaa Nick LaMedica as Zazu Martina Sykes as Shenzi Forest VanDyke as Banzai Robbie Swift as Ed

Supporting this talented lineup is a dynamic ensemble, including William John Austin, Iman Ayana, Isaiah Bailey, Samantha Lauren Barriento, Eric Bean Jr., Layla Brent, Thembelihle Cele, Daniela Cobb, Lyric Danae, and many others who seamlessly shift between animals, dancers, and villagers to bring the world of Pride Rock to life.

Every performance felt polished and deeply felt. Mukelisiwe Goba’s Rafiki opened the show with a voice so rich and powerful it gave me chills. Peter Hargrave’s Scar was delightfully sinister, while Nick Cordileone and John E. Brady as Timon and Pumbaa had the audience in stitches. For DJ, it was Simba’s journey—brought to life by Darian Sanders—that really resonated. He was absolutely captivated.

Sharing the Magic

What made the night even more unforgettable wasn’t just the spectacle, it was sharing it with my son. Watching his face light up as the animals paraded down the aisles or hearing him laugh out loud at Timon’s jokes reminded me why theatre is so powerful. It’s not just entertainment, it’s a shared experience and a memory made together.
