Its Friday night and its ladies night. So where do we decide to go? Don Guacamole’s.

My BCIT girlfriends and I get together every few months. Our usual spots are Joey’s on Burrard or Milestones; but I love mexican food, and I loved the name, so I convinced them to check out this restaurant. Located on Robson St, the location was central and easy to get to, considering that we are all coming from all over the place (Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond).

We ordered the nachos and guacamole to start. The nachos were quite tasty and the portion was generous. Lots of toppings. The guacamole was a hit with the girls, super tasty, but unfortunately didn’t come with enough chips. We asked a few times for more chips but it took the waitress forever to bring them to the table.

I ordered the tacos al pastor, they were very tasty and I love that their tacos are made the more traditional mexican style (small tortillas, sauce on the side)

My favorite dish of the evening has got to be desert. I ordered the flan. It was a delicious, thick custard that had an almost  cheesecake consistency to it, served drizzled with burned caramel. yum yum.

Overall, the food was pretty good, but I’m not sure if you can maintain a clientele based on food alone. Dining out should be an experience. Which brings me to this…

This is a restaurant that you do not, and I repeat, do not come for the service. Its awful. We waited for almost 20 minutes for our drinks. We asked for water that never came. My friend Joyce’s dinner came a good 10 minutes after the rest of our meals. I asked for a cup of coffee with dessert and I was told they didn’t carry COFFEE? what kind of restaurant doesn’t carry coffee??

I think this restaurant is worth trying once. But there are a lot of excellent Mexican restaurants in the city that treat their diners better.

  2. I have never tried dessert at a Mexican restaurant before; probably because the main courses are always so filling.

Thanks for the review, I’ve heard about this place and have been meaning to go check it out. I’ll be sure to leave room for the flan.

  3. I’m so glad that you said that about the service. I went there quite awhile and the service was TERRIBLE. Looks like things haven’t changed.
