Shota Sushi

Driving through the Kerrisdale neighbourhood one fine evening, Jake and I stumbled upon this small restaurant at 5688 Yew St. They claimed to have the best sushi in Vancouver,  how could we resist?

Our server was very sweet and took our drink order right away – piping hot tea for Jake and a Kirin beer for me.  I highly recommend Kirin if you’ve never tried it. It’s a crisp, light lager from Japan. Delicious.

We started our meal with an order of salmon sashimi. It was fresh and firm. It came in a bowl of shaved ice to keep it cold.  The sashimi is the freshest I’ve ever tasted – it had a deep, red colour and the presentation was wonderful.

Maggie, the restaurant co-owner and manager came to our table and introduced herself. Her brother Dan is the head chef and the restaurant has been in business for over nine years.  Shota Sushi has the distinction of being one of the first restaurants in Vancouver to serve fusion rolls.

On her recommendation we tried the house signature roll: The Kerrisdale. It had shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado and tobiko. We followed that tasty morsel with the Scallop Magma roll. It was a combination of spicy tuna, chopped scallop, tobiko and home-made black sesame sauce. Both were delicious.

We also had a California roll, a Dynamite roll, and some Gyoza. I was very impressed with the quality and the care that the Shota staff took with our food.

Now for dessert: We ordered the Azuki Soy Pudding – it was a smooth and silky home-made pudding, made with 100% natural soy milk, served with Japanese red bean.

This is a great place to have dinner – the food is good and the service is excellent, but be prepared to pay a little extra for the quality. Is it the best sushi in town? If it isn’t, it’s pretty close.
