Chewies Steam & Oyster Bar recently opened up a second restaurant in Coal Harbour – a much needed southern / soul food restaurant downtown. Tonight they hosted a special media night event to showcase their menu and location. Upon arrival, Cameron greeted us and showed us a display of various dishes that are featured on their menu, most dishes also available at the Kitsilano location such as Beef Brisket, their most popular Southern Fried Chicken, The Peacemaker Cobb Salad (with cracklin’ pork), Kale Salad, Pork Belly Cracklin’, Fried Gator & Hush Puppies, and desserts Bourbon Bacon Bannofee and Valrhona Chocolate Lava Cake. Currently not available at the Kitsilano location but can be ordered at the Coal Harbour location is really colorful dish of Blackened Steelhead that also included a fresh Creole shrimp maque choux, dirty rice, and quinoa.

We had a chance to try the fresh oysters and watch a oyster shucking contest with the guys at Chewies. Other dishes that were available for sampling included Fried Green Tomato topped with a crab slaw, Fried Fanny Bay Oysters Oysters, Fried Gator and Hush Puppies served with a house made jalapeno jam, Blackened Albacore Tuna served with a chili-lime vinaigrette, avocado & mango maque choux, and their popular Southern Fried Chicken glazed with honey butter and on top of a piece of cheese biscuit. All were well prepared and were featured on their regular menu. Since most of the items were deep fried, we got full quite fast. I would recommend if you order these dishes off the regular menu to share! Oh – and gator does taste like chicken!

They sent us home with delicious house made bacon brittle and white chocolate bacon bars. Thanks to Charles, Cameron and the team at Chewies for the fun night! We will be back again soon for fresh oysters and to try your Bourbon Bacon Bannofee!

Chewies Coal Harbour also hosts buck a shuck every night from 3pm – 6pm – definitely a great after work hang out spot, with some tasty cocktails on their menu!
