Big news out of Victoria: the iconic Fairmont Empress has achieved something incredible. It was crowned the #1 City Hotel in Canada. This was announced by Travel + Leisure in their 2025 World’s Best Awards. It’s also earned a spot on the prestigious T+L 500 list, placing it among the best hotels in the world.

Nearly 180,000 Travel + Leisure readers voted on these awards. They are considered some of the most trusted in the travel world. The awards recognize excellence in everything from service and location to dining and design.
The Fairmont Empress opened its doors in 1908. Since then, it has stood as a symbol of timeless luxury on Victoria’s Inner Harbour. The hotel has grand architecture and historic charm. Its signature Afternoon Tea is a highlight. The hotel has long been one of Canada’s most celebrated stays.
A major turning point came in 2014. Developer Nat Bosa acquired the property. He launched the ‘Return of the Queen’—a $60+ million transformation. This project refreshed the interiors while honouring the hotel’s iconic past. That vision came to life in 2017. It has continued to evolve. Most recently, a new Harbour view terrace and expanded Fairmont Gold experience were added. The Gold experience features elevated rooms, an exclusive lounge, and personalized service.
There’s more to come. Further investment is planned over the next two years. This will guarantee the Empress continues to raise the bar—not just in Canada, but globally.
If Victoria is on your travel list (and it should be), this historic hotel deserves a spot on your itinerary.
