The Vancouver Fringe Festival is always full of surprises. This year, one of my favourite picks was BFF-less. It is a brand-new play by Roomie Productions, a collective of young emerging artists from Studio 58.

I went to see it with my best friend Josh. This felt fitting. BFF-less is all about the awkward, hilarious, and heartfelt search for friendship. The play follows Sadie as she posts a Craigslist ad looking for a number-one best friend. When Allison and Juno answer, Sadie puts them through an unorthodox “Best Friend Test.” The big question: can friendship really be forced? And how do we find meaningful connections as adults in a city like Vancouver?

Why BFF-less is a Fringe Festival Standout

This show delivers several laugh-out-loud moments, but it also sneaks in some deeper reflections on what it means to build and cherish friendship. It made me feel incredibly grateful to already have found my own BFF. Watching it with Josh made the experience even more special. It’s the perfect type of play to see with your best friends.

The production itself shines with a talented team. Melissa Oei directs it. Ben Brown, who wrote the play, also serves as producer and sound designer. Samantha Kerr, Emma Soothill, and Hikari Terasawa bring incredible energy to the stage as performers and producers, with Kosta Lemermeyer rounding out the cast. Behind the scenes, Janavi Chawla keeps everything moving as stage manager and voice-over actor, alongside Sewit Eden Haile, Jaren Guerreiro, and Kady Yeung.
