Stanley Park feels different at night. The crowds thin out, the trees go dark around the paths, and Malkin Bowl starts to glow like a little secret in the middle of the city. That is part of what makes Theatre Under the Stars such a Vancouver summer tradition. You are not just buying a ticket to a musical. You are walking into the park with a sweater over your arm, hoping the weather holds, and letting the city disappear for a few hours.

This summer, Sister Act opens at Theatre Under the Stars, bringing music, comedy, and a whole lot of soul to Stanley Park. The musical officially opens July 7, 2026, as part of the TUTS season running from July 3 to August 22 at Malkin Bowl.

The Movie that Started it All

Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act follows Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who witnesses a crime and ends up hiding in the last place anyone would look for her: a convent. Deloris is loud, glamorous, funny, and completely out of place among the sisters. That clash is where the comedy begins, but it is not where the story stays.

The heart of the show is what happens when Deloris begins working with the convent choir. What starts as awkward and uncertain slowly turns into something joyful. The sisters find their confidence. Deloris finds a kind of belonging she did not expect. The music becomes more than performance. It becomes the way these women learn to hear each other.

That is why Sister Act works so well for summer theatre. It is bright without being empty. It is funny without feeling throwaway. It has sequins, gospel-inspired numbers, big ensemble energy, and the kind of warmth that makes people leave a little lighter than when they arrived.

A Unique Vancouver Theatre Experience

Malkin Bowl adds its own kind of magic. Outdoor theatre is never perfectly controlled, and that is part of the charm. The air cools down, the trees move around the stage, someone laughs a few rows behind you, and the whole night starts to feel shared. In a city where everyone is usually rushing, Theatre Under the Stars asks you to sit down, look up, and stay awhile.

Sister Act is an easy one to recommend. Go if you loved the movie. Go if you need a fun night out. Go with friends, your mom, your partner, or someone who says they do not really like musicals but secretly might. This is the kind of show that can win people over because it does not try to be precious. It wants to entertain you, and it does.

The story also has more tenderness than people sometimes remember. Deloris walks into the convent thinking she has nothing in common with these women. By the end, they have changed each other. That is the part that lands. The show is not just about a singer hiding from danger. It is about voice, friendship, courage, and the strange places where people find family.

For Vancouver, it also gives you a reason to make a night of Stanley Park. Walk the seawall before the show. Grab dinner nearby. Arrive early. Bring a sweater, because even warm days can turn cool once the sun goes down. Let the park do some of the work.

A note for families: the production includes gunshots, mature language, adult themes, and strobe lighting.

Vancouver summers are short. A musical in the park, under the trees, with a choir of nuns and a disco diva finding her way back to herself, feels like a pretty good way to spend one of those nights.

  1. Love it! This might be the year I finally get to Theatre Under the Stars. My kids have all been at various times, but I’ve never seen a production there. This one looks terrific!
