One of Victoria’s most recognizable spaces has quietly reopened, and it marks the start of something bigger. Fairmont Empress has brought back The Bengal, reintroducing it first as a breakfast room while setting the stage for a larger transformation still to come. It’s open daily from 6:30am to 11:00am, welcoming both hotel guests and locals.

The menu draws from Q at the Empress, with a few subtle callbacks to the lounge’s past. Dishes like Mango Lassi Chia Pudding and the Bengal Tartine hint at that connection without leaning too hard on nostalgia.

During renovations at Q, the space is also stepping in for dinner service, with reservations available and walk-ins depending on availability.

For anyone who remembers the original The Bengal Lounge, this reopening feels like a return, but not a reset. It’s a continuation.

A Room That Has Always Been Part of the City

This space has been part of Victoria’s rhythm for over a century. It started in 1912 as a Reading and Writing Room, then became the Coronet Lounge in 1954, known as the city’s first cocktail lounge of its kind.

Over time, it turned into a place people kept coming back to. Celebrations, quiet conversations, that feeling of being somewhere a little special without needing a reason.

Now, The Bengal returns with that same intention, just shaped for how people gather today. The redesign keeps its roots but shifts the mood.

Original architectural elements like the carved beams and structural details are still there, but the space feels softer now. Velvet seating, cane textures, and a lighter palette open the room up and bring it closer to the gardens outside.

It still feels like The Bengal, just less formal, more inviting.

This Is Just the First Chapter

What’s open now isn’t the final version. Once renovations wrap at Q at the Empress, The Bengal will shift again, becoming Victoria’s largest private dining room. The idea is to create a space for gatherings that feels elevated but still rooted in the building’s history.

It’s a natural next step, especially for a room that has already been hosting private events for years.

Worth Knowing Before You Go

The reopening of The Bengal isn’t about recreating what it used to be. It’s about carrying it forward. Set inside the Fairmont Empress, overlooking the Inner Harbour, it continues to be one of those spaces that reflects the city around it. Evolving, but still grounded in its past.

If you’ve been before, you’ll recognize it. If you haven’t, this is a good time to see it at the beginning of its next phase. Click here for reservations.
