I decided to leave the Vancouver area and ventured to Port Coquitlam for lunch today. I Stumbled upon Sang Thai & Vietnamese Restaurant on Shaughnessy Street. The space is very inviting, with both beautiful bright and muted tones. Mood lighting throughout the place was great with grainy woods on the walls and floors including real bamboo installations. The service was friendly and prompt and our server was attentive and helpful with menu selections. The prices were very reasonable for dishes cooked with such flavor and presentation.
Sang Thai has 31 signature dishes and offers take out and delivery. They are located in the Shaughnessy Shopping Center so parking is not an issue. The menu is wide with a variety of traditional Thai & Vietnamese cuisine along with some great specials and new takes on some old classics.
We started with the Roti with Thai Curry Dip – Extremely popular pain fried Rutty crepes served with red curry sauce ($6.99). I love this dish and order it whenever I am at a restaurant that serves it and I have to say this was probably the best I ever had. The Rotis were really crispy and the curry was just the right blend of spice. Mild but full of flavor.
I had the Stewed Beef Brisket with Pate Sauce – Stewed beef brisket braised with Vietnamese curry paste ($13.99). This dish came to the table sizzling hot in a metal pot. I ordered Sticky Rice which went great with this dish. My dinning partner had the Thai Seafood Red Curry – Shrimps, Squid, Mussels Fish & Vegetables in a red curry sauce ($15.99), which also came in a metal pot sizzling to the table.
For dessert we had a very popular dish back in the mother land called Ice Kachang – Shaved ice with red beans, creamy sweet corn, grass jelly and a few luscious sweet sauces to give this dessert a great blend of sweet & cool. I have to say I didn’t know what to expect when I ordered this but I really loved it and am looking forward to having it again. After coming home and looking it up online, I found out it’s also very low in calories!
The menu offers some specials and has promotions throughout the year. They did have a couple of fantastic looking and sounding dishes, a well as every curry known to man on the menu! Lots of great seafood dishes also. You can view their website at www.sangrestaurant.com.
