Novo Pizzeria and Wine Bar

I’ve been meaning to go to Novo for a very long time.

Novo Pizzeria specializes in rustic, Italian, comfort food and Neapolitan pizza –  thin crust pizza baked in a wood burning oven, creating a crust that it’s crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Once the pizza comes out of the oven, it’s sprinkled with sea salt and drizzled with olive oil, creating the perfect canvas for the ultimate pizza.

And that’s what we were looking for, when we headed down to Novo on a Sunday afternoon – the perfect pizza. But before we ordered it, we had some amazing appetizers:

The Sicilia Meat Balls ($8) – I’ve heard nothing but good things about this dish, and I’m happy to report that it lives up to the hype! yum, yum, yum… delicious tender meat, seasoned perfectly, the pine nuts add a whole new texture and taste, combined with the tanginess of the tomato sauce and the crispiness of the age cheddar… I tell you, these bad boys have got to be tasted to be believed. Well done Novo! Well done.

Burrata ($13) was next on the menu. Burrata is a dish made from mozzarella and cream. The outside is hard and the inside is gooey and creamy. It’s one of my favourite things to eat. This particular Burrata was drizzled with balsamic vinegar and olive oil and served with stewed tomatoes and arugula. Personally, I thought this dish was a tad too busy. Burrata is a simple dish, and adding too many ingredients takes away of the delicious simplicity and pleasure a good burrata can bring.

Moving on to our main course, we had the Margherita Pizza ($13) fresh basil, fiori di latte and tomato sauce. Fiori di latte is a type of mozzarella cheese that is very creamy and milky in taste. It’s very rich, and it’s delicious when perfectly mixed with a good tomato sauce. The crust did not dissapoint: made from stone-ground caputo and then aged for 72 hours to give the dough a deep and complex taste.

It was perfect.

For dessert we had the trio of chocolate mouse. This is a combination of white, dark and milk chocolate mouse with a chocolate sponge cake centre. This is dessert was very rich. Too rich for just one person, I recommend sharing this, but only with someone you love.
