Now that I have a 3 year old, I feel that much more responsible for the safety of my family. Whether it’s making sure the smoke alarm battery has been changed to replacing our old car tires and brakes…I’m constantly on the lookout for ways to protect us from harm.
Unfortunately my experience of driving has only gotten worse over the past few years, and most of it has to do with distracted drivers.
Nowadays distracted drivers are the number one problem on the road. Last year alone, distracted drivers were responsible for twice as many deaths as impaired motorists.
The statistics demonstrate that if you text and drive you’re a whopping 23 times more likely to crash or cause a near collision event. Although distracted drivers who use their phone while driving are 4 to 5 times more likely to have an accident, texting while driving has now surpassed them as the most likely way to end up in a serious fender bender.
According to some experts, the use of mobile devices while behind the wheel is going to be the number one cause of fatal car accidents for teenage drivers in BC and across Canada.
Given the close calls I’ve had over the past few years with distracted drivers, I’ve come to the conclusion that being prepared for an accident is probably the best strategy.
The problem then becomes the issue of making people own up to their part in causing the accident. Having had the opportunity to confront bad drivers on their behaviour on the road, I’ve quickly realized that they can be real jerks in person, and rarely admit to having cut you off or done something else illegal. In fact, my experience is that they become quite belligerent and angry when confronted.
So your best bet is to be prepared with real evidence of the event. Something that will clearly demonstrate that their distracted or impaired driving was the cause of the problem.
Enter the BlackVue DR650S-2CH, a top of the line discreet dashcam that covertly records both the front and rear of your vehicle with crystal clear precision; preserving the key details of who did what, when and how.
With this superb piece of technology installed I no longer feel as vulnerable on the road anymore. Case in point…back in November 2016 I caught on camera a near collision I had with a distracted driver who made an illegal “U” turn behind a bus (see video below).
Not only did he cause a near fatal collision, but later on he ran a red light, closely missing a pedestrian riding his bike across the intersection (see video below).
When I caught up with him at the next stop light, I noticed that he was a young man in his twenties driving a courier car. To my surprise, I watched as he blatantly texted while sitting in traffic, and didn’t even put down his phone when we started to move.

Nonetheless, I did contact the company to report his extremely bad driving habits; but there are countless drivers that I’ve seen who think they are able to text and drive without being caught or causing accidents.
Although there are many competitors in the dashcam market, BlackVue is a world leader in designing superb high-end dash cams that deliver both quality and host of cutting edge features at an affordable price.

A few key things to remember when installing: first, try to get a reputable and experienced installer to do the work. I thought I could do it myself, but quickly realized that a seasoned professional installer is really what’s needed. Not only do they know how to install it properly to avoid key problems (like a line showing up in the rear view video feed from the defroster), but they can sound proof all the wiring and test all the features to make sure everything works perfectly.

I’m now of the opinion that every car should automatically come pre-equipped with a dashcam, and I think that the more people realize that they’re actions are being recorded on the road, the more they’ll choose to obey the traffic laws.
Not only am I delighted with what the BlackVue DR650S-2CH has done to protect me and my family, but as BlackVue continues to innovative and expand on their cloud platform, I’m eagerly looking forward to further exploring the amazing features this amazing device offers.
