Summer in Vancouver means the return of Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, and the 2026 season is kicking off with a lively, music-filled production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Opening June 9 on the BMO Mainstage in Sen̓áḵw/Vanier Park, this year’s launch sets the tone for a season built around humour, community, and a distinctly local lens.
A Fresh, Vancouver-Inspired Take on a Classic
Directed by Rebecca Northan and adapted with Bruce Horak, this production reimagines Shakespeare’s comedy in a fictional Vancouver suburb centred around a community athletic centre with a serious soccer obsession.
At the heart of the story is Falstaff, played by Ashley Wright. Here, he’s a washed-up former soccer star chasing relevance and quick money. His plan to woo two married women, Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Page, quickly unravels into a sharp, funny chain of events driven by their intelligence and sense of revenge.
The result is a fast-paced comedy grounded in a setting that feels familiar, with music woven throughout to keep the energy high.
A Season That Leans Into Accessibility and Fun
This opening production reflects what Bard continues to do well. It makes Shakespeare feel approachable without losing the heart of the original work.
Artistic Director Christopher Gaze describes it as playful and accessible, and that intention carries through the creative choices. The design team, including Set Designer Amir Ofek and Costume Designer Barbara Clayden, brings the suburban setting to life with colour and detail that connect the story to Vancouver audiences.
