Acme Cafe is one of the new wave of restaurants that are popping up in the Downtown East Side. Along with Meat and Bread and La Taqueria, these no-nonsense eateries are breathing new life into this part of town, and are a welcome change to the neighbourhood of East Hastings.
Acme Cafe is a welcome sight – their art deco decor and their open kitchen concept are very inviting. The service is attentive, but not overwhelming. The atmosphere is relaxed.
When we got there, the place was buzzing with young guys, (probably from the new SFU Woodwards Campus) enjoying a casual supper.
The menu says comfort food all over – there are chicken pot pies, mac and Cheese, meatloaf… You name it. Also an impressive amount of pies – banana cream, lemon meringue, pecan, pumpkin… The choices change daily I’ve been told.
Everything created in this eatery is made from scratch. Nothing is bought frozen. You can taste the quality in every bite.
The food was excellent – and on a cold night, it definitely hit the spot. I recommend Acme Cafe. My one suggestion is that if you’re planning to dine there, definitely, definitely, make room for dessert. Follow them on twitter: @Acme_Cafe
