Herons West Coast Kitchen and Bar

Herons is one of those quintessential West Coast Restaurants that really brings together what Vancouver is all about: Good food, fantastic views, excellent service and sustainability. Herons offers seasonal menus made from local, organic ingredients. They are also part of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Oceanwise program.

This was my first time here, and I can promise you, it won’t be the last. What brought me here was their $38 three-course Dine Out Menu. Dine Out Vancouver is an excellent time to check out new restaurants, as most of them are offering their best dishes in their set menus, for new diners to try. I knew I was in for a treat!

I was seated right away by a very attentive hostess, who offered to take my coat. My table was perfect. with a view of the new convention centre and the waterfront. I really don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house, as the restaurant features floor-to-ceiling windows.

Cocktails are very affordable for downtown Vancouver here. I ordered a premium gin and tonic for $7. While I was enjoying my drink, I was offered some complimentary bread, all organic. The bread came with a half a clove of honey roasted garlic. I mixed mine with butter to make a garlic spread that was out of this world.

First course: the seafood chowder. With mussels, clams, seafood and chorizo, this chowder was divine. The chorizo complimented the seafood brilliantly and it gave this dish a whole new dimension of flavor.  The chowder was thick and it was a decent portion. with the dine out menu you have choice of the chowder or a salad. Go for the chowder. You won’t regret it.

Second course: Lamb Sirlion with autumn squash, cabbage, beans and Okanagan apples. Oh wow. That’s all I can say. The lamb was tender and so flavorful! They were truly a thing of beauty! I ordered my chops medium rare, but I think medium would’ve been a better option. My chops came with lamb boudin, made with a spicy lamb sausage. Great combined with the sweetness of the apples.

My dish had three lamb chops, again, a very generous portion.

For dessert I had the Caramel Banana Cake which consisted of  caramelized bananas, salted peanuts, banana cake and caramel ice cream, with a chocolate sauce. Fantastic. The cake was moist and delicious, the caramel bananas added a satisfying crunch.  A great way to end my meal.

You can’t beat the price for this dine out. Great quality, amazing service and the food was tasty. Click here for their 2012 Dine Out Menu. Herons is Zagat rated.
