Tasting Plates YVR Recap – Downtown South

This outing of Tasting Plates took us to the Davie St and Yaletown neighbourhoods. The participating restaurants ranged from casual to upscale, from Italian to Mexican.

Our first stop was at C Prime Modern Italian Steak House in the Century Plaza Hotel. Our offering included a certified Angus steak and a twice baked potato. It was accompanied with shaved parmesan and arugula salad. This dish definitely left me wanting more and I look forward to coming back here again and trying their full menu.

We didn’t have to walk far to our next stop – Beyond Coffee is the casual coffee bar in the lobby of the Century Plaza Hotel. We had a small sample of Affogato.

We left Burrard St for the Davie Village. Our destination was Los Amigos Taqueria.

When we got there, the small restaurant was packed and the staff were busy creating Nutella filled Churros served with a Dulce de Leche spread. As an additional treat, we also got “Atol de Elote” – a cornmeal meal drink sweetened with cane sugar and cinnamon.

We kept moving down Davie St towards our next stop at Saj & Co. This small eatery is famous for their Lebanese cuisine and  vegan dishes. Our Tasting Plate was as elaborate as it was plenty: half of an Anton The Great Sandwich which came overflowing with hummus, vegetables, pomegranate molasses and mint. This sandwich was amazing. The flavours were brought together with homemade organic rye and buckwheat dough and served with the  Green Balila – a chickpea dish with mint.

And that was only round one: The second course had generous servings of Tabboule, Hummus with pita bread and Kale Mottabal.

One of the most elegant offerings of the evening was found at Truffles Fine Foods. Truffles Kitchen features homemade sandwiches, entrees, along with baked goods, desserts and a full range of hot and cold drinks to enjoy side. However, our dishes came from the catering side of the business and  we were treated to Chicken Rillette topped with a plum brulee & nutmeg foam, a Moroccan-style Lamb pop with a cucumber mint raita and  seared Tuna Takaki with citrus kombucha and taro root crumb. Unbelievable.

After so much savoury goodness, we were ready for something sweet. We found it at Ganache Patisserie their array of sweet treats included the Cassis et Matcha – a mix of chocolate moose, blackberries, cassis marscapone cream and matcha sponge cake, and the Cacao et Earl Grey – vanilla-cocoa nib butter cake and Earl Grey tea infused ganache with buttercream.

We finished our evening at Bella Gelateria. Their four-course offering included beet risotto, caprese salad, a mini slice of their Geona pizza, and whiskey fudge and fior di latte dessert.

The Tasting Plates events are a great way to get to know the culinary gems in your neighbourhood. Revisit old favourites, or make new ones. Next up: Kitsalano on September 30. Get your tickets here.
