Product Review: Shakeology

I’m a big fan of Beachbody.com, my fitness journey began with their videos and I got hooked on my healthy lifestyle thanks to their great online community. The one thing I’ve always been curious about is their meal replacement brand. Now, I love food, I wouldn’t even be part of this blog if I didn’t love food. But once in a while, when I’m having one of those early mornings, or when I’m really on the go after a workout, I do enjoy a protein shake to curve my appetite and replenish my body. I’ve tried a good many brands out there so, when a really good friend of mine gifted me a bag of chocolate Shakeology I was super excited to finally try it.

Shakeology claims that it can help you “lose weight, reduce junk food cravings, provide healthy energy, and support your digestion and regularity.” Right off the bat I can say that the taste is creamy and delicious, I added a banana for an extra dose of goodness but the package itself is chock full of good stuff. And I can attest that it does do what it claims, I had a shake for breakfast and was not hungry (and didn’t have any cravings) until well after my scheduled lunchtime. However, it’s so full of good stuff that it did wreak havoc on my digestion system. I showed the ingredients to my naturopath and she said that it’s all very good stuff, but it may be too much good stuff at one time and it could have been a shock to my system. Without sharing too much, let’s just say that I was VERY regular that day.

I’ve read the reviews on Shakeology and they are all pretty much split down the middle. Some reviewers swear by it and others had the same (or worse) reaction that I did and are completely put off by it. For me, I ended up gradually increasing the serving size, after that first day I decided to do half a serving and every day increased a little bit until I reached the full serving size, just to play it safe. I felt good, the half dose wasn’t as filling but it was still good enough, and the full serving still gives me the gurgly stomach but not as bad as the first day. All in all, I would suggest trying the small sample size to see if you like it or if it causes a reaction. In Canada, a bag of 30 servings is approximately $129 because of shipping and the exchange rate, which is the main reason why I hadn’t tried it before. So I really do suggest you try the samples before committing.

You can find out more about, and purchase Shakeology at http://www.shakeology.com/ where you can also find really delicious looking recipes to spruce up your Shakeology experience. I’m sorry to say that it is definitely to rich for my blood, but if I had a chance to get it at a reduced price, I would jump on that in a heartbeat.
