The Best of Kaohsiung, an agricultural event if happening today and tomorrow (June 5 & 6, 2015) at Robson Square. This event is hosted by Tai One Trading. This promotional event, open to the public, highlights premium fruits from the Kaohsiung region of Taiwan, located in the southern part of the Island. These fruits include Pearl Guava, Chin Huang Mango, Golden Diamond Pineapple, Red Dragon Fruit, and Yu Her Pau Lychee. There will be samples of the fruits, as well as showcase of how these fruits are incorporated into different food/drink items for purchase by local vendors such as Vegan Pudding & Co, Oollo Tea, Patisserie LeBeau, JuiceTalks Beverage & Co, and more. I dropped by this event today, and saw tons of cartoon mascot statues. Turns out there are 5 variations of Kao Tong Tong statues – the official mascot of agriculture representing Kaohsiung, Taiwan. These cute statues in different sizes have been placed out on the slopes of Robson Squares to represent the Kaohsiung exhibit today and tomorrow. There are 5 versions of Kao Tong Tong that represent the Gardener, Backpacker, Traveller, Farmer, and Chef.
I had the opportunity to try out Vegan Pudding & Co, where they have incorporated the Golden Diamond Pineapple into their pudding. These puddings are for sale for $3.95 and are made of coconut milk and squash.
I also tried some infused Golden Diamond Pineapple Oolong Tea and Red Mango Black Tea from Oollo Tea, a local company that specializes in naturally fresh made teas. You can follow them at @oollotea and purchase their teas at their booth or local retailers found on their website.
The main Best of Kaohsiung booth also provided samples of the different fresh fruits – all fruits are exported from Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I was told that you can find these produce now at IGA Marketplace and Fresh Street Market in Vancouver. My favourite food sample was the Pearl Guava – it’s a lot sweeter and more fragrant than the ones I’ve found at T & T. I definitely will be looking forward to having these fruits in the near future. For those looking to check this out, it’s on today and tomorrow from 11am – 6pm at UBC Robson Square. Alternatively, Best of Kaohsiung will be hosting In Store Cooking demos at Fresh Street Market in West Vancouver on June 7 from 4-4:30pm, along with fruit sampling from 4pm-6pm same day. There are also cooking demos and fruit sampling at the following IGA Marketplaces: June 8 – IGA Marketplace Kingsway Burnaby 4-4:30pm Cooking demo, 4-6pm fruit sampling; June 9 – IGA Marketplace Main St, Burrard, and Kerrisdale locations 4-6pm.
